Deborah Dewbury’s studio explores the poetry of the the Great Lakes region through willow basketry and cultivation. Embracing the metaphor of baskets as a vessel for ideas, materials, and experiences, Deborah’s studio is a place of transformation where twig, bark and branch fuse with imagination to create functional works of art that aim to transcend their utilitarian purpose. These baskets are more than just a culmination of Deborah’s craftsmanship; they also speak to the labour and care put into cultivating willow and the unique colours, scent, and materiality found within this everyday material. Each basket is a testament to the symbiotic relationship between maker and material, embedded with the essence of the land from which it originates.
