Clay has captured Marlies Gueth’s hands and heart. She loves its feel, its malleability and its ability to pick up texture. When she is not working with clay, she thinks about it. Marlies has chosen to focus on hand-building techniques. These allow her to work in an organic, asymmetrical way. It invites her to employ a wide variety of techniques to form, decorate and embellish her work. Although she starts a piece of work with an idea in mind, she allows herself the openness to accept and welcome unanticipated “happy accidents.” She finds that her most successful work takes shape, when she observes the clay and works alongside it. Marlies’ work can be described as organic, textural and unexpected.
