For the past few years, the steampunk aesthetic has crept in and out of the periphery of Marijo Swick’s work and marched across into her practice. Using the alter ego Professor Millie Moon, an explorer and scientific purveyor of oddities and interesting “artifacts,” she trades on this fiction of the future that never was. Using her previous work which dealt with genetics and ethics as a jumping off point, Swick translates some of the more tantalizing ideas to the mechanical processes and beautifully gritty philosophy of steampunk. Whether creating crazy playful contraptions or engaging the viewer in thought provoking conversation, Swick works with text, both traditional and digital drawing and a plethora of mixed media. Expect to find something unusual at her studio.
